Attention and Movement
Does your child struggle with attention? How much is he or she walking, running and playing?
A review published in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience reveals a growing number of studies showing the importance of movement with cognitive development, including attention. The authors write, “Locomotion is fundamental for an optimal child development. The ability to smoothly and adequately navigate through the environment enables the child to interact with the environment. Children with developmental disabilities including autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) demonstrate locomotor difficulties. ADHD and autistic spectrum individuals have reported significant motor difficulties both fine and gross.”
Movement is key to brain development and improving biomechanics is a fundamental part of improving brain function. You can support your child’s brain health by increasing the amount of time they spend moving and playing. Enroll them in a highly active sport, take up dance, and encourage activities around the home that involve movement.
