Glutathione and HBOT A Powerful Duo

Glutathione and HBOT A Powerful Duo

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant found in every body cell and comprises three amino acids (the building blocks of proteins). It is unlike most antioxidants in that it is created in the liver. Glutathione works to neutralize free radicals, reducing the overall oxidative stress in the body. Maintaining functional levels of glutathione is imperative to optimal metabolic and immunological health. Still, it can also prove a challenge, as many factors can cause a drop in appropriate levels, such as poor nutrition, environmental toxins, stress, and aging.

There are many benefits to glutathione supplementation, including:

  • Neutralization of free radicals
  • Reduces oxidative stress
  • Supports immune function
  • Regeneration of Vitamins C & E
  • May improve psoriasis
  • Assists in apoptosis (regulated cell death)
  • Improves insulin resistance in older adults
  • Reduces symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
  • It may help fight autoimmune disease

More research is being published daily on glutathione’s beneficial effects on many conditions and ailments. Maintaining optimal and functional glutathione levels begins with diet. Glutathione can be found naturally in many fruits, vegetables, and lean meats, such as:

  • Cruciferous vegetables (i.e., broccoli, cauliflower, and bok choy)
  • Allium vegetables (i.e., garlic and onions)
  • Eggs
  • Lean proteins such as chicken and fish

Along with exercising, a glutathione-rich diet poses little to no risk of adverse reactions, and supplementation may not be necessary for everyone. There are some risks to glutathione supplementation, however, they are rare. Risks and side effects may include:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Bloating
  • Allergic reactions such as rash
  • Bronchial constriction leads to difficulty in breathing

While glutathione can be found in many different foods, it is still possible to miss the adequate recommended daily value. Glutathione supplementation may benefit those experiencing fatigue, brain fog, sleep problems, and other symptoms associated with oxidative stress. Glutathione may be administered via IV, injection, or oral supplementation, with the most effective method being through IV.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, commonly known by its acronym “HBOT,” has been used since the early 20th century. In the 1940s, the U.S. Navy used HBOT to treat decompression sickness in deep-sea divers. Today, it is a very effective treatment for many conditions, from concussion/TBI (traumatic brain injury) to carbon monoxide poisoning to slow-healing wounds caused by complications of diabetes or radiation injury.

While inside an HBOT unit, an external device slowly increases the pressure inside the chamber to anywhere from 1.5-4x normal barometric pressure while allowing 100% pure oxygen to flow throughout the inside. This increase in partial pressure of gases allows oxygen to be pushed into the bloodstream more efficiently, allowing more red blood cells to pick up more oxygen and, in turn, increases oxygen supply to damaged tissues. HBOT also encourages the growth of new collagen and skin cells through angiogenesis (forming new blood vessels). Sessions typically last one hour.

Many conditions can benefit from HBOT treatment, some of which include:

  • Concussion/TBI
  • Decompression sickness
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Crush injuries
  • Severe anemia
  • Non-healing wounds (i.e., diabetic foot ulcers)
  • Gas gangrene
  • Severe bone or skin infections that cause necrosis (tissue death)

While HBOT is considered generally safe for most people, it should be noted that there are certain instances in which HBOT is not recommended as a treatment modality. Side effects are usually mild and temporary but should not be ignored. HBOT is not recommended for the following persons/conditions:

  • Recent ear injury or surgery
  • COPD, including cystic fibrosis and emphysema
  • Collapsed lung (pneumothorax)
  • Fever/cold
  • Pregnant women

Some people may also experience:

  • Claustrophobia
  • Increased pressure in ears similar to being on an airplane
  • Middle ear injuries
  • Sinus congestion

While many people see improvements in their conditions after just one or a few treatments, multiple treatments are generally recommended to increase the overall effectiveness.
